This video was rather ignorant, there is a reason behind all of these drills. Fire Drills: The purpose of Fire Drills is to quickly and effectively evacuate a building with hundreds of students in the event of an emergency inside the school. The purpose behind walking calmly and within a single file line is to evacuate the school safely, if everyone ran towards the exit, people would trample against the exit, causing even more problems. With these protocols in place, a school with thousands of students can quickly evacuate within minutes. Schools are outfitted with sprinklers, and fire detection/notification systems. This mitigates the risk of a fire spreading. These drills work for a reason, the last school fire death in the U.S. was in 1958. Lockdown Drills: The purpose of these drills is not to "deceive" the aggressor, it is to delay them and to mitigate casualties until law enforcement arrives. Aggressors know that everyone will be going into lockdown, and that every law enforcement officer within 10 miles is responding to the school. An aggressor will not try and open a locked door, they will continue to attempt to find a softer target. Within 1-2 minutes, law enforcement officers will arrive at the school, and over the next few minutes, dozens of other officers will arrive. Law enforcement personnel are trained to immediately begin to clear the building, and to locate the aggressor and quickly engage and end the situation. If everyone panicked and ran into the hallways, it would not only place them right in the path of the aggressor, but it would also make it harder for law enforcement personnel to identify the aggressor. Earthquake Drills: The purpose of earthquake drills is to mitigate the risk of facing bodily injury, and to prevent fatalities during an earthquake. Desks will provide protection to vital organs, shielding large falling objects. Inside a building would be the safest place, if you jump out the window, you not only risk facing serious injury, but you are now subject to the dangers outside the building. (e.g. Fallen power lines, fallen trees, pipe bursts, etc.) Tornado Drills: The purpose of tornado drills is to mitigate the risk of serious injuries or death during a tornado. The purpose of hiding in a hallway, crouched down is to place as many walls as possible between you and the exterior area of the building, preventing the risk of debris striking you, which is the largest cause of fatalities during a Tornado. In addition to this, crouching protects your vital organs and neck, increasing your chances of arrival, should you be struck by debris. These drills all have specific purposes behind them and have been implemented for the sole reason of protecting lives. Just because these drills may not always seem logical, doesn't mean they don't work (a tiny bit of common sense and critical thinking skills would prove this). I suggest before making comments on school drills, you first research the reasons behind them, and why they are implemented.
